Got my swivel gearwrench stuck. Of course this happened as I was proclaiming the many benefits of said tool to the friend whose car I was working on. Panic ensued.
First rescue attempt was to remove the bracket that the bolt just above my wrench was holding on. That failed to leave enough room. Then I tried drilling into the head of the bolt in the hopes that the bit would drive the bolt back in. Nope. My last resort was to cut the head off of the bolt with a cutoff wheel. Yep. The bolt was loosened enough where I could remove the rest by hand, and my wrench now wears a battle scar. Crisis averted.

I've done this. Luckily I only had to remove my wrxs headers to save it.

Those kind of surprised really suck. Nice save! I had a spark plug break off below the flats that the socket was grabbing. Center ceramic came out, but the threads were rusted in there! Turned a spark plug job into a 6 hour nightmare since regular bolt extractors weren’t working.

Can’t you, like... wrench the bolt back in, grab an open ended wrench, and try again?

Or could you not get to the drive switch lever and going further up couldn’t happen because it was already maxed out(although it looks like there was still room).

Those wrenches don’t have a switch, to reverse it you flip them over. Hard to do when the wrench is trapped.

Yikes. This job was for the spark plug tube seals(and spark plugs) on a friends Impreza.

These need to be flipped over to wrench it the other direction. In its current configuration it could only become more jammed.

Also on a Subaru.

the number of stories i’ve been told about this stuff is insane.

I’m sure this won’t be the last time I do it.

That’s a pretty serious design flaw, remind me not to buy those. hahaha

wow, I didn’t realize that. I don’t see why they don’t have a switch, seems like it would be just as easy to do and would make all manner of things better.

Don’t blame the tool for my ineptitude, haha. They’ve actually saved me a few times.

The real question is, would that bolt have even come out with that upper bracket on?

Hahaha. You bastard. It indeed would not. Of course I discovered this after I had put everything back together. I thought one post displaying my idiocy was enough

The whole point of them is that they can give you acess wher a regular ratchet can’t fit. The switch mechanism will add bulk, which defeats the purpose.

Hahaha, I've learned that lesson more times than I'd like to admit.
